Partner 12: SF-Control Oy, Finland (SFC)
SF-Control Oy is a Finnish medium-sized company (25 employees) belonging to the Emerson Process Management Marine Solutions group, with Damcos A/S in Denmark and
Rosemount Tank Radar AB in Sweden. SF-Control develops and manufactures LevelDatictm online tank level gauging, water ingress
detection and draft measuring systems for all sizes and kinds of ships and offshore structures.
LevelDatic can be used for measuring levels and filling rates in all types of tanks such as fuel oil, lubrication oil, sludge oil, bilge, fresh water and
ballast water tanks. It can also be used for water ingress detection and water level measuring in cargo holds, dry ballast tanks and void spaces on bulk carriers,
and for void space water ingress monitoring on passenger vessels. More than 2,300 LevelDatic systems have been delivered to
ships and offshore structures of all types and sizes. Cruise vessels, passenger and car ferries, ro-pax, ro-ro, LNG/LPG carriers, chemical/product tankers,
VLCCs, ULCCs, FPSOs, bulk carriers, container vessels, car carriers, icebreakers, navy ships, supply vessels, tugs, semi-submersibles etc. have been
fitted with LevelDatic. Special applications of the LevelDatic technology include dynamic trim and list systems, void space monitoring
and flooding control systems.
SF-Control has together with Onboard Napa Oy developed a flooding monitoring system, where LevelDatic supplies continuously online the information from all tanks and
void spaces to the Onboard Napa advanced loading calculator. This system has been adopted by most cruise ship companies and many passenger ferry
operators. Also retrofit installations have been made on many old cruise vessels.
The key persons of the SF-Control contribution to the research project are Mr. Martti Helamaa, R&D manager, and Mr. Peter Köhler, managing director of the company.
Martti Helamaa has twelve years experience in marine and naval systems and instrumentation. He holds degrees of M.Sc. in engineering physics and Lic.Sc. in
electrical engineering from Helsinki University of Technology.
Peter Köhler, M.Sc. (Nav.Arch.) has sound experience on ship technology. Prior to joining SF-Control Oy he has worked for over 15 years as principal
engineer responsible for ship and offshore R&D programmes and projects at Det Norske Veritas and five years as RINA non-exclusive surveyor for Costa
Atlantica series cruise vessels.
